Apart from the incorrect details about the splitting-up of the pocket, probably based on exaggerations at troop level and not corresponding to the facts, from the above we have Koniev’s point of view which is important when otherwise one has only guesswork and inference to go by.

From the quote, Koniev believed that all Eighth Army including the commander-in-chief, ten divisions and a brigade had been encircled. He therefore overestimated his great success and thought that the gap still open was larger than it it actually was. For the timid and faint-hearted Soviet leadership there is neither explanation nor apology. It may be that the Red marshals, despite all the big talk, simply did not believe in the possibility of a devastating victory, they remained too haunted by the memories of past years. The mythical belief in the invincibility of the German Army was momentarily still alive and helped here to push the end a little farther away. We must leave the question unanswered as to whether that was in our best interests or not.
